Set in an ecologically devastated future with humanity on the brink of extinction, Age of Bees tells the story of one young woman’s coming of age. Orphaned as a child by the epidemic that has decimated the world, Melissa must decide whether to remain in the dogmatic seclusion to which she has grown accustomed or to leave the relative safety of the past behind.
MadLab always strives to present strong, original theatre with unique premises and content relevant to contemporary audiences. Age of Bees tackles issues ranging from ecological responsibility and stewardship, theology, and feminism in a mature, measured manner while telling a simple yet gripping story of one girl’s emergence into womanhood.
MadLab Theatre and Gallery is a non-profit organization that provides an artistic haven for the creation and experience of original works. It is a laboratory where individuals and ensembles are free to experiment without censor. Each year the theatre produces seven to eight full-length original productions including Theatre Roulette, the longest-running annual shorts festival in Columbus. In addition, MadLab serves emerging artists by providing an affordable, quality venue to small arts organizations.

The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) returns to the historic Southern Theatre to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra’s (CJO) Home for the Holidays. Broadway vocal sensation Marva Hicks makes a special return engagement for the annual holiday spectacular. Back by popular demand, she joins artistic director Byron Stripling for a sleigh ride of holiday favorites done CJO-style. Each year promises a special yuletide surprise, and this year is no exception!
CJO has taken some of the most traditional holiday songs and turned them into toe tappin’, foot stompin’, hand clappin’ holiday jazz magic—with jazzed up versions of favorites from Tchaikovsky’s "Nutcracker Suite"and "Sleigh Ride" to "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town."
After the final notes of the concert, JAG will turn the Southern Theatre into a holiday party complete with hot chocolate, Christmas cookies and even more music – from the release of their NEW 40th anniversary CD, Come Together. During the party guest can rub elbows with the amazing musicians of CJO.
JAG is proud to partner with The Salvation Army of Central Ohio during its entire run of Home for the Holidays. In 2011, The Salvation Army distributed more than 21,000 new toys and assisted more than 8,000 families through its Adopt-a-Family and Christmas Cheer programs. Representatives from The Salvation Army will be on hand at each performance with their signature red kettles to accept donations.
When: Through Sunday, December 2 , Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday & Saturday at 8 p.m.; Sunday at 3 p.m.
Where: Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main St., Columbus
