Ohio Craft Museum Presents Gifts of the Craftsmen

The 12th annual Gifts of the Craftsmen, a holiday exhibition and sale of fine craft, is the perfect place for shoppers to discover unique gifts this season, including handcrafted jewelry, pottery, art glass, baskets, clothing and more. All items for sale were created by more than 60 fine craft artists from around Ohio and across the United States.

When you buy your friends and family gifts this holiday season, it will surely come from the heart, but why not have it come from Ohio, too? There is a particular joy in the act of giving a gift that was crafted by a local artisan. Not only are you giving something that is one-of-a-kind, you’re also supporting our local economy and talented artists.

“We are very excited about the holiday sale this year,” commented museum director Betty Talbott. “Many of our favorite artists are returning and we’ve added work by a number of new artists who are making functional yet beautiful items.” The museum offers a colorful and convenient alternative to mall shopping, with free parking conveniently located next to the building.

When: November 13 through December 23, 2011, Mon–Sat, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sun, 1–4 p.m.

Where: Ohio Craft Museum, 1665 W. Fifth Ave., Columbus, OH 43212.

Ohio Statehouse Presents Capitol Artists Fair and Open House to Celebrate 150th Birthday

On November 15, 1861, construction on the Ohio Statehouse was finally completed after 22 years of construction. Now, 150 years later, Ohioans will commemorate this historic birthday of the Statehouse and its worthy contributions to American democracy.

To celebrate the 150th birthday, the Statehouse will present an Open House and the Capitol Artists Fair. The day’s activities will include a cake-cutting ceremony, the unveiling of the Ohio Civil War Governors portraits which will be on display for a period of time in the Rotunda and tours throughout the day. The third annual Capitol Artists Fair will be a focal point of the day-long birthday party.

The Capitol Artists Fair will include both contemporary crafters and artisans from every corner of Ohio—a one-stop shopping destination for visitors looking for unique holiday gifts. The atmosphere will allow visitors to talk with the artists about their work, and in some cases even see the artists producing their art on-site, from glass and jewelry, to pottery and painting.

In addition to arts and crafts, the Capitol Artists Fair will offer samplings of a variety of food and wine from Ohio Proud Food and the Ohio Grape Industry Committee. Ohio Proud food samples will be available all day, and the Ohio Grape Industry Committee wine tasting will take place from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Birthday greetings can be as unique as Ohio’s 11.5 million residents. Visitors will be invited to sign a large birthday card, wishing the Ohio Statehouse many happy returns and enduring fame. The card will become part of the Statehouse archive collection. The cards will be put back on display in 2061 during the Statehouse’s 200th anniversary. Ohioans are invited to email or mail in greetings. To be included in the public display, greetings should be mailed by November 8 to: Ohio Statehouse 150th Birthday, Ohio Statehouse, 1 Capitol Square, Columbus, OH 43215.
